How TikTok engagement rate is calculated

Engagements = likes + comments + shares + saves. Divide them by the audience measure you choose and multiply by 100.

By views

Engagements ÷ video views × 100. The usual TikTok formula: much of a video’s audience can come from the For You feed rather than from your followers, so views describe who actually saw it. Use it to compare your videos with each other.

By followers

Engagements ÷ followers × 100. Useful for comparing accounts of different sizes, for example in a brand pitch. A video that travels far beyond your followers can score above 100%.

Example: A video with 10,000 views, 520 likes, 34 comments, 21 shares and 45 saves has 620 engagements: 620 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 6.20% by views.

Frequently asked questions

Should I calculate TikTok engagement by views or followers?

Use views to judge a video, because many of its viewers may not follow you. Use followers to compare accounts, for example when a brand asks for your rate. Pick one formula and use it every time you compare.

What counts as engagement on TikTok?

Likes, comments, shares and saves (TikTok also calls saves favorites). Views, profile visits and new follows are not counted as engagements in this formula.

What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?

By views, Socialinsider’s 2025 average was 4.20%, so a result around 4% is typical for business accounts. By followers, Quid’s 2026 median for brands was 2.01%. Your own recent videos are the most useful comparison.

Why is my rate by followers above 100%?

When a video reaches many people who don’t follow you, its engagements can outnumber your followers. That usually means the video travelled beyond your audience, but check that the counts come from the same video.

How do I work out my account’s average?

Calculate your last 10 to 20 videos with the same formula, add the rates and divide by the number of videos. One viral video shouldn’t define your average.

Does buying followers or views change my engagement rate?

Yes. Adding followers without more likes, comments, shares or saves lowers your rate by followers. Purchased views or likes also change the result by views, so leave those videos out when you judge your content.
