How Instagram engagement rate is calculated

Engagements = likes + comments + shares + saves. Divide them by the audience measure you choose and multiply by 100.

By followers

Engagements ÷ followers × 100. The most common formula, used in brand pitches and in most published benchmarks.

By reach

Engagements ÷ accounts reached × 100. Compares engagement with the people who actually saw the post, so it is better for judging the content itself.

By views

Engagements ÷ views × 100. Views count every time the post or reel was shown, including repeats, so this is usually the lowest of the three.

Example: A post with 120 likes, 8 comments, 6 shares and 11 saves has 145 engagements. On an account with 5,000 followers: 145 ÷ 5,000 × 100 = 2.90% by followers.

Both reports measure business and brand accounts, and Socialinsider counts only likes and comments. A result that includes shares and saves, or comes from a smaller creator account, will often be higher. Your own recent posts are the most useful comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use followers, reach or views?

Use followers to compare accounts or to match published benchmarks. Use reach to judge how a post performed with the people who saw it. Use views for reels and video. Pick one formula and use it every time you compare.

What counts as engagement on Instagram?

Likes, comments, shares and saves on the post. Profile visits, follows, link taps and story replies are not counted in this formula.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

Published benchmarks for brand accounts sit well under 1% by followers: 0.48% in Socialinsider’s 2025 data and a 0.30% median in Quid’s 2026 report. Smaller accounts often score higher, so compare with your own recent posts first.

Can I use it for reels and carousels?

Yes. Formats perform differently, so compare reels with reels and carousels with carousels rather than mixing them.

How do I work out my account’s average?

Calculate your last 10 to 20 posts with the same formula, add the rates and divide by the number of posts. One viral post shouldn’t define your average.

Does buying followers change my engagement rate?

Yes. Adding followers without more likes, comments, shares or saves lowers your rate by followers. Purchased likes or views also change the result, so leave those posts out when you judge your content.
